Hi Bill, looks like a great ride. I just retired this year and am considering a similar trip next year. I’ll spend this year on some shorter runs along the Great Lakes trail to get in shape and check out my gear. One of my biggest questions is locating campsites. Have you picked your stops based on camp sites? Hope you have a great trip.
I would say on campsite availability vs specific campsites, with the exception of provincial parks. I prefer provincial parks so if there is one in the general area of a planned stop, I don’t mind pushing myself a little further or shorten a day to stay at a provincial park, within reason.
Hi Bill,
Thanks for all the info. Do you recommend waiting for retirement to start the trip?
I am in the middle of finding a new career or studying again. But I want to make biking happen for myself and for my health (mental and physical).
I am a teacher by profession. I was thinking of doing a biking trip with the profession of teaching involved. Don’t know how to do it. Just started researching. I would love to know what Sue thinks of that idea, how to combine these two together. lol!
I am just a random stranger who wishes to travel as well.
Regards,
Hi Ali. I would recommend taking this trip when the time is right for you. Due to family and work obligations it has not been the right time for me up to now. Biking has been awesome for my physical and mental health, especially in the past few years.
Sue said you could certainly implement your experiences from your bike trip into your teaching (without knowing what you teach), I would take it one step further and see if there is a way you can implement your planning into your teaching. When I was a Scout leader the youth loved planning their trips. How awesome would it be to have your students help you plan your trip, then follow you virtually while you are on your journey.
Hats off to you for being a teacher, and good luck. Keep me posted in what you decide.
Safe ride
Bill
A very impressive and carefully planned itinerary. Starting and ending here and spending time with Sue are great ideas. I wish you all luck every kilometer of the way.
Rosemary
Thanks Rosemary, I’m so excited to be able to include Sue in the trip.
Curious why you’re flying from St. John’s to Vancouver and cycling to Victoria instead of flying to Victoria.
I’m still playing with that. My concern is another transfer for my bike.
Last summer I cycled from Fort Frances to Victoria. My flight back was Victoria to Calgary to Winnipeg to Thunder Bay. With Westjet. The bikes made it through all three transfers no problem. They were packed well though.
